2002-9-4 Vibra-Free IMTS 2002 Demonstration

In collaboration with IBAG, Compumachine now offers a new spindle option for its Vibra-Free Ultra-High-Speed-Hard-Milling center. The new spindle runs at 42,000 RPM with HSK E40 tooling, its continuous power achieves 14HP (18HP S6) with higher toque in lower speed range. The newly developed spindle features a groundbreaking design on its lubrication system. Through EDM drilled holes on the spindle-bearing race, a thin film of oil-air mist is injected directly on the ceramic balls. Consequently, the thermal fluctuations are better controlled and the use of larger size bearings is made possible while maintaining the top RPM.







Vibra-Free also reduces the need for typical high speed spindle related warm up procedures by taking advantage of IBAG's built-in spindle shaft monitoring option. With this feature, sensors ahead of the front spindle bearings detect position changes of the spindle nose - and thus of the tool holder. Using the signals generated by the detector, CNC calculates the offset for the Z-axis. Vibra-Free can then compensate the axial elongation cause by the thermal effects & high-speed centrifugal force in real time. Therefore, high thermal accuracies are easily maintainable in continuous operation regardless how long & what RPM the spindle is running.

Another enhancement comes on the tooling side, Compumachine will offer an optional shrink fit package with this version Vibra-Free. Shrink fit tooling is so far proven to be the best choice for the High-Speed-Marching process. Shrink fit tooling is light, rigid, well balanced and with excellent run out which is a perfect match for HSM process; it enables the use of long reach end mill, improves the spindle/tool life and surface finish. In addition to the new spindle option, Compumachine has had numerous successful Vibra-Free installations since 1999. Along the way, the popular Vibra-Free is able to improve almost every aspects of its performance: power, rigidity, and accuracy.
